The second phase of the building work at Ballydugan Retail Park in Downpatrick, saw the construction of four new retail units as part of an expansion of one of the busiest out-of-town shopping centres in County Down.
The project for a private client was completed in just 28 weeks on a fixed price basis and involved the construction of a 23,000 sqft extension built of steel frame, flat roof and steel clad walls in addition to a service yard at the rear of existing retail outlets.
Prior to construction, some 400 precast concrete piles were driven into very soft ground to form the foundations of the new units after which approximately 3500m3 of reinforced concrete slabs and walls were placed. The works also included construction of superstructure shell, provision of all services to the units, new car parking and exterior walkways and a 150m long 600mm diameter storm culvert supported by steel hangers on piles.
