FK Lowry successfully installed large diameter rotary bored piles for a new Network Rail bridge as part of the Southern By-Pass Project near Lichfield in the West Midlands.

FK Lowry installed 4 No. 1,650mm Dia. Rotary Bored Piles up to 14.5m deep using 1,829mm OD permanent casing. So as to avoid railway disruption, the works were undertaken during overnight weekend possession work over a seven-week period utilising two Soilmec dual purpose piling rigs.

“The piling element of the scheme was a high profile, critical path element of the overall project. Therefore, the planning and execution of all parts of the project was of paramount importance. So as to mitigate the risk of any downtime due to rig breakdown, we mobilised a second piling rig for stand-by purposes. Thankfully we did not require the second resource. Piling tolerances were critical here as we were installing the permanent casing just 500mm away from the Network Rail track. We also procured bespoke 1,650mm Diameter Rotary Tooling to adhere to the rock socket diameters required for the clients design. We were delighted that we were able to successfully deliver the scheme for our client safely, to programme and to budget”
