Official Opening of £26m Lockerbie Schools
30 June 2010
A NEW era in education for Lockerbie was marked with the Official Opening of the Lockerbie Academy and Lockerbie Primary campus on 18th June 2010.
The £26 million schools, constructed by H&J Martin Limited under their FMP Joint Venture Partnership, cater for more than 1,100 primary and secondary pupils.
Both have their own Head Teachers and share some facilities. They are part of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Smarter Schools PPP Project with e4d&g. Managed by Amey Facilities Management, the schools were completed on schedule, taking two-and-a-half years to build after many years of planning. Pupils began lessons in the new facility on 28th May.
Monday’s official opening also saw the dedication of a Syracuse cairn in the school grounds which marks the bond with the American university since the Pan Am bombing. Each stone represents one of the 35 Syracuse students who died in the air disaster. Inside the cairn is a time capsule put together by Lockerbie pupils. It is due to be opened on May 28, 2040.
David Mundell MP commented: “As a former pupil of both schools it is a great honour to be opening the new Lockerbie Primary and Academy.
“This is the beginning of a new era for both schools in splendid new premises, which will be welcomed by staff, pupils and the wider community…….Congratulations are.…due to the council and everyone involved on the construction side for delivering such an ambitious project in such a short timescale.”
Councillor Hyslop added: “I am delighted to be attending the opening of two more fantastic new schools for Dumfries and Galloway. These are two of the ten new educational buildings to be completed within a year for the region and it is certainly an impressive feat for everyone involved in the project.”
